A Diachronic Study of Aspects of the Celebration of Passover in England. 1920s and 1980s Compared

Description

A study of the Jewish festival of Passover in England, comparing recollections and experiences recorded during interviews with residents of a Jewish Old People's Home in Manchester (in 1982), and gathered from questionnaires completed by students studying at the University of Leeds and Leeds Polytechnic (in 1983). The Introduction includes notes on research methodology, Passover (the festival), the Seder, informants and variations in Passover terms. Chapter One concerns the sale of Chometz (or Hametz) and the ritual search and burning of leaven; Chapter Two concerns the feast known as the Seder, and compares practices in the 1920s and 1980s (with sections on guests, clothing, language and hymn singing). The final chapter concentrates on Passover food and drink, including descriptions of some foods referred to by the informants. An Appendix indicates the answers given to the questionnaire, in tabular form.
