Thatching in Wiltshire

Description

A dissertation which looks briefly at the history of thatching from earliest times, and then more particularly at thatching in Wiltshire in former years. The study also investigates thatching in the early 1980s, and describes the methods and materials used. A number of thatched buildings within the county are highlighted, and suggestions made as to why thatch is still used as a roofing material. Eleven chapters cover a general history of thatching, thatching in Wiltshire in former times, general principles, the thatcher's tools, materials and methods, ornament, costs and estimates, why thatch is still used, thatching of general interest in Wiltshire, the thatcher's tales and rhymes, the future of thatching. A glossary of terms is included, and photographs of thatched buildings (domestic and agricultural), thatching tools and thatching in progress are included throughout. The collector gathered much of the information contained in the study from local people, including visits made in August and September 1982 to four male informants with experience of thatching.
