Priston Mill: A Study of a Working Corn Mill
Description
A study which takes Priston Mill ( Priston, Somerset) as a working example of material culture, within a more general discussion of milling and its history. The first of its five sections presents a brief history of milling (with sections on two mill types), whilst the second outlines the principal features of milling (with sections on water supply, the waterwheel, gearing, millstones, ancillary machinery). The third section presents a history of Priston Mill, followed by a general description of the mill itself (with sections as for section two). The final section covers production and sale. A glossary of milling and mill-related terms is included, and photographs and line drawings show the mill, its location and machinery.
