A Study of Certain Marriage Customs

Description

A study of marriage customs, based on responses to a questionnaire compiled by the Societé Internationale d'Ethnologie et de Folklore. This concentrates on wedding presents, including the dowry, and customs surrounding the end of bachelorhood. Questionnaires were sent to members of the Folklore Society, and the study includes eighteen completed scripts, with accompanying correspondence. The study comprises a sample questionnaire and the collector's accompanying letter, sections on the organisation of the exercise, list of informants mailed, response to the questionnaire, details of informants who responded (including the folklorist, Ethel Rudkin), an analysis of the responses to the three sections of the questionnaire (Prior to 1914, After 1918 and End of Bachelorhood), additional information and the distribution of responses.
