The Domestic Sewing Needle: An Enquiry into the Vocabulary and Folklore Associated with its Manufacturing Processes
Description
A dissertation in four parts, based on fieldwork carried out in Redditch and Studley. The first part provides a general history of needle-making and a history of the trade in the Redditch area. Part Two describes contemporary needle-making processes, illustrated with the collector's ink drawings, photocopied published drawings and photographs. Part Three presents comments on, and conclusions drawn from, an article on needle-making published in 'The Universal Magazine' in 1784. Manufacturing processes described in this article are compared with modern-day processes. Part Four describes the ancillary trade of fish hook manufacture, illustrated with photographs taken by the collector. Appendices contain a glossary of terms used in the needle and fish hook industries, pictures showing the various types of sewing needles and a list of contacts and informants.
