The Puck Fair of Killorglin

Description

A study of the Puck Fair, held in Killorglin, County Kerry, and based on fieldwork interviews undertaken in August and December 1981. The Introduction presents background information on the town, whilst Chapter One describes the preparations made in the week leading up to the Fair (held annually on the 10th-12th August). Chapter Two recounts the collector's experience of the three days of the Fair, which includes a horse fair, street entertainers, dancing, procession of floats, the crowning of a goat King by the Puck Queen, sports events and the dethronement of the King. Chapter Three examines the pageantry of Nationalism, including the processional floats and songs sung; Chapter Four considers the presence of 'tinkers' at the Fair, with comments from two of the collector's informants; Chapter Five describes the enthronement of male animals at other Irish Fairs; and the final chapter offers an account of local belief concerning the occasion and the origin of the crowning of the goat.
