Description

An introductory history of the Irish migrants to England, and in particular to Manchester, based on the collector's interviews with her father and one other Irish descendant living in the city. Six chapters cover the causes and volume of Irish migration into Britain from the late eighteenth century until 1980, the occupations of the early Irish immigrants in the early nineteenth century, social conditions for the early Irish immigrants and their relations with the English, the rural background, the occupations and social life of the Irish immigrants in Manchester during the late 1940s and early 1950s, the question of identity and prejudice.
