A Study of the Musical Ornamentation in the Traditional Singing Style of Darach Ó Catháin

Description

An examination of the singing style of Darach Ó Catháin, an Irishman living in Leeds, through analysis of his singing of one song, 'John O' Reilly'. The project comprises three sections: an explanation of the transcription procedure, analysis of the song, and analysis of performance and ornamentation. Textual and tune transcriptions are included. The latter transcriptions are presented in three sections - a skeletal transcription of the tune without ornamentation, full transcription of the performance, complete with ornamentation, and excerpts from phrases of the song which are presented and juxtaposed in order to compare and contrast the ornamentation. The performance thus analysed was tape recorded by Cathy Lewis in 1973 for her project, 'Darach Ó Catháin: Traditional Irish Singer' ( LAVC/SRP/2/172). Tape reference LAVC/SRE/A576r.
