Studies in the Phonology of the Living Dialects of Lancashire

Description

A study of the dialect spoken in twelve Lancashire localities, based on fieldwork undertaken by Stanley Ellis in 1954, for the Survey of English Dialects. An introductory section presents descriptions of the Survey of English Dialects and some of the Lancashire informants, a geographical and economic survey of the county, brief descriptions of the villages investigated, and the dialects of Lancashire in the Old and Middle English periods, and at 1955, compared. Chapters One and Two describe the development of Middle English sounds in the dialects of Lancashire (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), and Chapter Three describes the changes in consonantal sounds from the Old and Middle English periods down to 1955. The first of three appendices outlines the development of can't, the second provides maps of prominent consonantal changes, and the third appendix (comprising 3 files) contains words recorded by Ellis in 1954, re-recorded on printed sheets by the collector in Dieth-Orton Questionnaire Book order. The answer to each question, for each locality, is transcribed phonetically. The etymology and Middle English equivalents are also recorded. The three files contain sheets for Books I-IV, V-VI and VII-IX.
