The Living Dialect of Borwick (Lancashire): A Descriptive and Historical Survey
Description
A study of the dialect spoken in Borwick in Lancashire, based on interviews conducted with three local informants during three periods in 1970. An introduction to the village and the informants is followed by five chapters which present a descriptive account of the sounds of the dialect recorded in 1970, describe the development of Middle English sounds in the living dialect (vowels of stressed and unstressed syllables), describe changes in consonantal sounds from the Old and Middle English periods down to 1970, and present a tabular summary of Old English, Middle English, Scandinavian and Old French equivalents of the stressed vowels in the Borwick dialect. An Appendix lists some unusual words and phrases, noted during the fieldwork (and recorded phonetically). An Index of Words is also included. Photographs show views of the village, Borwick Hall and the collector's two principal informants.
