The Dialect of Eccup in the West Riding of Yorkshire
Description
A study of the dialect spoken in the village of Eccup in West Yorkshire, based on data collected through fieldwork interviews with four inhabitants. An introduction to the village and the informants is followed by four chapters which present a description of the vowel sounds of the Eccup dialect, record the development of the modern dialect vowel system from Middle English (in stressed syllables), the development of Middle English sounds in vowels of unstressed syllables, and consonants in the modern dialect, and present a tabular summary of Old English, Old Norse and Old French equivalents of the modern stressed syllables. An index of words recorded in the study is included.
