Lindsay Carter, recorded in New Denver [continued from tape LAVC/SRE/A865]; talks about working in a silver mine in Sandon, 4000 feet below ground; describes the mine, mining machinery, the placing of gunpowder and fuses; miners' wages past and present; explains single jack and double jack mining methods; transporting ore out of the mine (rawhiding); use of (pack) horses in Sandon; horses and mules used in mines; personal experiences of accidents and close shaves; Union activity and the O.B.U [One Big Union]; strike for better wages; Union involvement in the running of Sandon Hospital; closure of O.B.U. in Sandon on the 1930s; thoughts on power of unions; miners' beliefs - not speaking/whistling/singing underground. Mr. Carter continues with talk of the sighting by one miner underground of small men with white whiskers; beliefs concerning black cats seen underground; rats in the mines, and beliefs relating to finding items taken by rats; bunkhouses; working as a cook at a miners' camp when a boy, and the jokes played on him; relates cookhouse anecdotes; describes a mining camp - buildings, amenities, cookhouse and food; miners' entertainments; powder heads (headaches caused by gunpowder smoke); music and (mining) songs; the stories behind the songs 'The Dream of the Miner's Child' and 'Big Black John'; discovering veins of silver and the use of divining rods.
