Compilation of Survey of English Dialects fieldwork recordings (copies) for Staffordshire locations 12St5-10. The original recordings were made in 1955 and 1965. The date when this copy tape was made is not known. [Announcement]; Sym Williams, a farmer, recorded in Ellenhall; talks about horse dealing and farming. [Tr. 12] [Announcement]; Mr. J. Tunnicliffe, a retired maltster, recorded in Hoar Cross; talks about farming; buying cigarettes; agricultural labourers' wages before World War One; threshing; tying sheaves. [Tr. 13] [Announcement]; Frank Barratt, a farm labourer, recorded in Mavesyn Ridware; talks about catching rabbits; the jobs of shepherd and stockman on a farm; work with cows and bullocks; cattle selling/showing in Lichfield. [Tr. 14] [Announcement]; Walter Carrington, a ploughman, recorded in Lapley; talks about laying a hedge; ploughing a field with horses. [Tr. 15] [Announcement]; Mr. F. Johnson, a retired farmer and railway worker, recorded in Edingale; talks about the village Club Day/Feast at Whitsuntide; the Wakes; May Day singing (rhyme recited on Maypole Day); Clemensing Day - children's house visiting custom involving the recitation of a rhyme, and the collection of largesse (money, apples and pears) - informant recites the rhyme; talks about his working life; Tamworth Statutes and the hiring of agricultural labour (reference to annual wages); lists the farms in the area that he has worked at, and the people he has worked for. Carter, recorded in Wigginton; talks about his schooling; work as a brick layer/repairer on the surface at a coal mine, 1910-1930; the General Strike of 1926; and the strike of 1921, regarding wages.
