Description

Compilation of Survey of English Dialects fieldwork recordings (copies) for Yorkshire locations 6Y21-24, 26-29. The majority of the original recordings were made by Stanley Ellis, in 1955, 1963, 1964 and 1966. Peter Wright's recordings in Cawood were made in March 1952. The date when this copy tape was made is not known. [Announcement]; Hollins Smith, a farmer, recorded in Heptonstall; recollects his childhood, including milking cows, schooling and quarry work; also talks about dry salting bacon and hams; relates an incident involving an escaped bull; scaring crows; buying boots. [Tr. 1] [Announcement]; Mr. Woodhead, a retired farmer, recorded in Clayton; describes Wibsey Horse Fair; farming; milking cows; farm routine; milk deliveries. [Tr. 2] [Announcement]; Mr. Catel, a foundry worker of Leeds [announcement states probably recorded by Stanley Ellis, in 1966], talks about foundry work (making baths) in the Armley district of the city; his role as Shop Steward; Trades Union membership. [Tr. 3] [Collector announcement]; Walter Smith, a retired farmer, recorded in Cawood; talks about Selby Market; working with horses. [Tr. 4] [Collector announcement]; William Farrar, a retired farm manager, recorded in Cawood; talks about ploughing with horses; agricultural labourers' wages. [Tr. 5] [Announcement]; Mr. Fisher, a retired coal miner, recorded in Thornhill; talks about his work in the East Pit in Thornhill; hours of work and wages; Scale Picking as a boy before working below ground; describes the coal face, the pit bottom and the use of Davy lamps; hewing coal with picks; filling tubs; wages and payment arrangements; trips to Blackpool; Thornhill Feast (July). [Tr. 6] [Announcement]; Bill Stevenson, a retired painter, recorded in Carleton; talks about Bonfire Night; Mischief Night pranks; events on Carleton village green; the village Pinfold; gentry in the village; mining. [Tr. 7] [Collector announcement]; Miss Dibnah, recorded in her home at Welwick; describes buttermaking and breadmaking (by hand). [Tr. 8] [Announcement]; James Gledhill, a retired mill hand, recorded in Golcar; describes the processes and stages in the production of cloth; the organisation of work in a mill; recreation - cricket; describes the game of, and implements used in, knur and spell; betting and knur and spell matches; collecting wood the week before Bonfire Night; Mischief Night pranks; ?Mills Bridge (Brigg) Fair; pigeon shooting; rabbit coursing; cock fighting.
