Mary Judge, recorded in Leeds; talks about her upbringing in the Lancashire village of Overton (1900-1914); community life; scrambling for hot pennies at weddings; wedding parties and the food eaten; children's Easter house visiting custom, Jolly Ladding - describes the costumes worn, recites the accompanying rhyme, reference to the largesse given (eggs from farmers) and sings part of a song; talks of dyeing eggs at Easter (colours); egg rolling and conkering, daisy chains; Pancake Tuesday; visitors to the village from other areas (to see local Pleasure Gardens); eating and singing at a local hotel on Pancake Tuesday - display of eggs in a top room; Michaelmas Monday - farmers hiring labourers in the village square, fastening with a shilling for twelve months' work; domestic service (describes women's uniforms); Christmas and preparations - food, drink, pricking a new rug, step dancing, carol singing at home, presents; talk of the song 'The Mistletoe Bough', sung at Christmas (by the informant's aunt), with hammered dulcimer and piano accompaniment; the local causeway and knowledge of the river tides between Overton and Sunderland Point; informant's upbringing by her grandparents and uncle and aunt; grandfather a fisherman in the Irish sea, shrimp catching and selling in Lancaster; informant selling/cleaning fish as a girl; fishermen's clothes, baskets, nets, net fastening with wooden spars; shore fishing; grandfather selling fish in Lancaster and giving the rest away to the poor on the way home; uncle and aunt's horse; names local farms; feeding cows; harvest time; making custards from beastings; uncle sending her on false errands (striped paint, quart of pigeon's milk); mussels and shrimps sold by grandfather at Leeds' market; informant's education.
