[Collector announcement]; Thomas Simpson, recorded at home in Lebberston; sings 'It's a Long Way to Tipperary'; talks about personal changes in employment after World War Two, and his move away from farming; describes food eaten as farm worker, also Christmas food; days off; Hiring Fairs; changes in Scarborough; Hiring Fairs and being hired by local farmers; waggon horses, roads and driving conditions, journeys to Driffield; describes the waggons used and how the horses were attached; TS's job as a horseman; ploughing and types of plough used, organisation of equipment, men and horses on plough days. Fighting between horsemen; method of ploughing; waggoner's responsibilities, leading turnip/corn drills; describes hierarchy of employment on farm (waggoner, lads, waggoner lad) and their individual responsibilities; TS a waggoner lad at Boythorpe; working conditions; describes indoor work (filling bags of corn); women on the farm; Land Girls during World War Two; women and soldiers helping with the harvest; farm jobs undertaken by women/girls; sings 'Smile Awhile'.
