Myers Johnson, dry stone waller, recorded outside in Kettlesing, talks about the village and his roles in the parish (officer, committee member); shows walls he has built himself; describes construction techniques and use of through stones, slate tops; cost of stone; building stone bridge and walls for local farmer, following a flood; stone cutting with chisel; pig killing; burning wind bushes; moles; weatherlore re. chimney smoke; damage to walls from trees and tree roots; comments on wall built by another person; tunnel from Kettlesing village; shaping stones. [Recording continues inside, possibly the informant's home]; talk of stonemasons; wall construction and throughs; sorting stones to find throughs; placing of stones; costs and time taken; farm owner for twelve years - talks about changes in local farms over the past sixty years; demolition of farms and stones given away; gives traditional remedy for ailing calves; stone walls and hedges compared; waller's hammer, shaping stones. The final twelve minutes of this tape is a conversation between Margaret Brooks and an unidentified male, and appears to have been recorded over the end of the interview with Myers Johnson [transcript refers to the fact that the tape jammed, and includes details of conversation with MJ not recorded]. They talk about the tape recorder, and MB's problems whilst recording Myers Johnson; informant mentions use of tape recorder at cattle auctions (to prove what sold and at what price); invites MB to record at an auction; talks re. cameras and photographs of farm sheds; students seen taking notes at an auction; discussion re. living in Leeds.
