[Collector announcement]; Evelyn Johnston talks about the Black Watch Jazz Band of Bedlington (Northumberland) during the period 1927-1928; boy and girl members; uniform; instruments; batons; mascot; practices; subscriptions and fundraising; around thirty members, aged 8-18; weekly competitions in pit villages; repertoire; Dipton Chinks (male adult band, Dipton, County Durham); Black Watch stopped 1936-1937, revived 1960s; function of the jazz bands; kazoos described (known as submarines); money/cup prizes; medals given to every band member. [Tr. 1] [Collector announcement]; Terence Clark talks about his involvement with the Coxlodge Coronets Jazz Band; bugler in the Durham Light Infantry band, asked to train the Coronets in 1971; participated in first carnival in April 1972 (also majorette competitions); describes carnivals attended, trophies awarded, parade, order of events; explains roles of Band Major and Drum Major, band sections and the order in which they parade; cites origin of jazz bands in the formation of bands of unemployed miners in the Durham area in 1921, playing harmonicas and jews harp - died out in the 1930s, due to work and joining Army; revival of (juvenile) jazz bands in the 1960s; growth of Associations; inter-Association competition once a year; reference to knock out competition/majorette competitions (independent of Associations); age range of band members (11-18); practices; selection and graduation from banner holder to kazoo player to the drum corps.
