[Collector announcement]; Herbert Hodgson, recorded at home in Bishop Middleham; talks about working in a colliery on leaving school; picking stones from tubs of coal; collecting tubs from the pit head; men's/boys' shifts and the working week; quarry work at the outbreak of World War One; working on locomotives; closure of the quarry; unemployment and dole money, c. 1932/1933; childhood recollections of visiting his father working in a quarry; father's work in a coal mine; differences between miners and pitmen/mineworkers; explains treatment of coal slurry; manufacture of coke; locomotive driving on quarry branch lines; responsibilities of engine drivers; collecting waggons, risks taken and potential for accidents; talk of village name, village history and local church. Continues with talk of Gala Day events, including quarry bands, parade (by quarries and collieries), the wearing of black arm bands, Unions and Lodges; local collieries and mining off the north-east coast, under the sea; talk of son-in-law and his career in the police; young people moving away from the village, but staying in the area; local work opportunities.
