Sound Recordings, Yorkshire

Description

Compilation of field recordings (copy extracts) made by Tony Green and others (including students of the Institute of Dialect and Folk Life Studies), and possibly used by him in a session, Interviewing with a Tape-Recorder, at an Oral History Society conference which was held at the University of Leeds' Ellerslie Hall [of Residence] on April 11th-13th 1975. The original field recordings were made in 1955, 1961, 1965-1966 and 1971. The date when this copy tape was made is not known. Mrs. Hudson of Wetwang, recorded by John Chamberlain, relates a local legend concerning a supposed witch, believed to have skinned a boy alive, and her hanging. [Tr. 1] John Swales of Merryfield, recorded by Catherine Cook, talks about a family from Kirby Malzeard and their visit to a witch doctor in Ripon, who supplied a cure in the form of a bottle of nails. [Tr. 2] Savile Richardson, recorded in Wakefield by Tony Green, recollects a belief learned during his schooldays that the evil eye had been cast on a farmer, explaining the loss/illness of some of his animals. The burning of a straw effigy on the kitchen fire was seen as the remedy for this situation. Mr. Richardson also talks about a white witch at Gawthorpe. [Tr. 3] Bill Ewing of Great Strickland, recorded by Stanley Ellis, talks about limestone quarrying in the area; luck stones in barns; salt; horseshoes. [Tr. 4] Bill Hill of Castleford, recorded by Tony Green, sings [First line: I am a driver, these are my tools.] unaccompanied. Tom Daniel of Batley, recorded by Tony Green, sings 'Poverty Knock' (with ukulele accompaniment). [Tr. 6]
