Compilation of extracts from field recordings made as part of the Survey of English Dialects. These extracts were copied from gramophone disc recordings, with announcements by Stanley Ellis . A speaker from Brigham (Cumberland) talks about a swarm of bees. [Tr. 3] A speaker from Wearhead (County Durham) talks about weather forecasting. [Tr. 4] A speaker from Eccleston (Lancashire) talks about mechanisation and the decline of the coal mining industry. [Tr. 5] A speaker from Welwick (East Riding of Yorkshire) describes the process of making bread. [Tr. 6] Mr. Gledhill from Golcar (West Yorkshire) talks about visits to Blackpool, new clothes at Whitsun and travelling to Huddersfield. [Tr. 7] A speaker from Wragby (Lincolnshire) talks about ploughing with horses, reaping and binding. [Tr. 8] A speaker from Lapley (Staffordshire) describes how to lay a hedge. [Tr. 9] A speaker from Sulgrave (Northamptonshire) talks about parish relief. [Tr. 10] A speaker from Mendlesham Green (Suffolk) talks about crops, harvesting and the use of a scud winder in securing a haystack.
