Description

Compilation of extracts copied from Survey of English Dialects field recordings made in the south of England. The first extract is from an interview with Harry Burghess [Burgess], made by Michael Barry in Firle (East Sussex) in June 1959; Mr. Burghess talks about leaving school; farmers selecting boys for work; farmer worked for as a boy; potato growing; mangel-wurzles; feed for bullocks; greyhounds kept for hare coursing. [Tr. 5] The second extract is an unidentified male, possibly recorded in Somerset, talking about cider making, the growth of large cider factories/breweries and their effect on farmers; the price of apples, and the using of apples as animal feed during slumps in the market. [Tr. 6] The third male informant, recorded in Horsington (Somerset), talks about cowdogs [?coydogs] and the care of his pedigree dog's coat. [Tr. 7] The fourth male informant, possibly recorded in Devon, talks about ploughing a field; fetching stone from Dartmoor with a horse and cart, for use in building a house; the working day and his pay. [Tr. 8] The final extract features William Bushell, recorded by Michael Barry in Denton (Kent) in January 1959; talking about pit ponies; working the coal face; working in the dark; pony boys. [Tr. 9]
