[Collector announcement]; Olive Metcalf, recorded at home in the Kirkstall area of Leeds; talks about living in back-to-back housing, Greenhow Walk; housework, including cleaning, gas lamps, cooking, water; speculates on the age of the houses; describes the layout of the house, cleaning, using donkey stones, window stones; curtains; shops in the area and owners, opening hours; clothes washing on Mondays - lines on pulleys/clothes props; rubbish collection; tripe seller; drying clothes in the cellar; Monday lunch (Sunday leftovers) - talk of food for other days, inc. fish on Fridays; ironing Monday night/Tuesday; cleaning fireplace on Thursdays, windows on Fridays; reading letters for other women; not decorating until the flies had gone (September); a fly at Christmas was lucky; cockroaches and dealing with them; mice; street traders; pot man; dogs and cats in the area; pawn shops.
