[Collector announcement]; Alice Baker, recorded at Pymore on the 17 July 1975 [continued from tape LAVC/SRE/A673r]; talks about March dust storms; floods of 1912 and 1950s; the condition of local (drove) roads; father's job as a farmer - talk of milking, feeding, manuring, cutting chaff, grinding mangel-wurzles; animal illnesses; describes daily routine on the farm. [Tr. 4] [Collector announcement]; Charles Baker, recorded at Pymore on the 17 July 1975; talks about the condition and repair of local (drove) roads; new houses in the village [Alice Baker contributes]; land reclamation and drainage; utilities - water, electricity, sewerage. [Tr. 5] [Collector announcement]; William Tall, recorded in Witcham on the 18 July 1975; talks about skating matches on flooded land, and names local skaters; river skating, c. 1895; harsh winter of 1916 and skating on the Washes; Littleport (Riots). [Tr. 6] [Collector announcement]; William Tall talks about an unidentified event held in Sutton, for local people and those from Witcham and Mepal, including food, fairground rides and fireworks; talks also of Sutton's town crier. [Tr. 7] William Tall continues with talk of local tradespeople, including a coffin maker, butcher and baker; apprenticeships; agricultural wages, c. 1900; travelling salesman known as the Packman. [Tr. 1] [Collector announcement]; Ernest Barber, recorded in Witchford on the 18 July 1975; talks about the parish relief given when his father died; his working life, including stone picking, milk man, horse keeper, engine cleaner on the railway, tractor driving, cement worker, fruit grower; keeping pigs; horse keeper at Chatteris; Witchford Feast in June; harvest time (hours and breaks); striking a bargain with a farmer for work; water carrying; drinking (spring) water; changes to the village; working with horses (foals, commands); dust storms.
