Description

Lindsay Carter, recorded in New Denver; talks about his birthplace; the town of Sandon - amenities, population, prominent citizens, community spirit; the Depression; Christmas time; Halloween; Christmas concerts and community entertainment; ski club, skiers, ski jumping; snow slides (avalanches) of 1932 and 1937, and their effects; floods of 1927 and 1933. Mr. Carter continues with talk of flooding in Sandon in 1933, attempts to stop the water, damage, fatalities; flood of 1955 and the damage to Mr. Carter's house; the Canadian Pacific Railway Company [later Canadian Pacific Limited] - trains and freight; changes to operation during the Depression; the town and population following the 1955 flood; Canadian Pacific Railway abandoning the local line; fires in Sandon in 1923 (others in 1900 and 1910); the red light district; bootlegging and drinking; the police and the Justice of the Peace in New Denver; Sandon people and nicknames; fraternal orders and the involvement of Lodges in organising community entertainments; square dances in people's homes during the Hungry '30s.
