Interviews with ex-coalminers from Abram, Hindley, Ashton-in-Makerfield and Shevington. Topics covered include work and leisure activities: whippets; practical jokes; beliefs; games (including Piggy, similar to knur and spell); pigeon racing; radios; food taken down the mine; accidents; Peg-Top game; miners' pay; starting work as a boy, jobs undertaken; games; pigeon racing; whippet racing; ball games. A number of gaps in the recording are the result of the collector erasing his questions to informants. [Tr. 1] Radio broadcast, 'Don't Go Down the Mine Dad' [1969-06-19 19:30], written, produced and narrated by Charles Chiltern. Documentary on British miners in the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century, focussing on politics, Unions, strikes and working conditions. Date of broadcast not known. [Tr. 2]
