Unidentified male singers singing in a Leeds pub [?the Regent], some unaccompanied, some accompanied by accordion or bodhran; also mouth music and instrumental on accordion, bodhran and whistle. Male informant, recorded at home, sings [unidentified]; and plays a [?gramophone] recording of a male singer singing [unidentified, with orchestral accompaniment]; fragment of unidentified tune. [Tr. 2] Male informant [?recorded in a pub] talks about the establishment in 1943 of the Irish Social Centre in Claypit Lane, Leeds, and individuals involved in Irish traditional music in the city at that time; describes the music played at the Centre (initially recorded, later live instrumentalists), people who attended (early on, mainly young women), the organisation of concerts and plays (including the singer Seamus Boyle); explains the difference between traditional song (a story told in song) and Irish song; explains lilting and whistling - competitions held at the Irish Centre; relocation of the Centre in 1945 to Cookridge Street, run by the church - Irish singing and dancing there until 1946; informant's move to the Roscoe pub - names instrumentalists and singers performing there; reference to the Irish National Club in Briggate, describes its clientele and problem element re. the National Anthem, changes in membership; Anti-Petition League and membership of the Irish National Club (take over) - original membership not interested in Irish traditional music; infiltration by informant and friends onto the Committee; membership of the Irish Social Centre - reasons for Irish only.
