?Collector reads from W. A. Clouston's 'The Book of Noodles: Stories of Simpletons, or, Fools and their Follies' (1888) - blason populaire associated with the town of Gotham, and the Fools/Men of Gotham; also reference to penning the cuckoo, moonrakers, 'The Merry Tales of the Wise Men of Gotham' (1840), edited by James Halliwell, Alfred Stapleton's 'All About the Merry Tales of Gotham' (1900) [collector lists 20 tales contained within this book], and references to stories in other publications. [Tr. 2] Albert Sharp, recorded in Gotham, talking about local inhabitants acting out games/stories of Gotham in the time of King John; also relates stories of a grasshopper, pig on the wall, penning the cuckoo, rolling cheeses, drowning an eel, a cow on a grass roof. [Tr. 3] Mrs. Poulson, recorded in Costock, relates tales of Gotham as told to her by her grandfather: cow on the roof, rolling cheese, three-legged stool, penning the cuckoo; also reference to the people of Gotham pretending to be mad, to prevent King John hunting on their land. [Tr. 4] Mrs. Smith talks about the cuckoo bush (where the men of Gotham caged the cuckoo), Cheese Hill, moonraking; reads her own poem about King John in Nottingham and Gotham; and cites her father's saying that more fools pass through than live in Gotham.
