Description
[Side 1] Ernest talks about changes on 66 acre family farm, compares ploughing with horses and with tractor, reflects on introduction of sprays to deter thistles and docks, compares manual work of past with increasing mechanisation, expresses reservations about increasing reliance on 'artificial' [= artificial fertilizer] and forcing of livestock and subsequent reduction in quality of meat. [Side 2] Ernest recalls father killing pig before introduction of licences, talks about mother making lard and 'browsells' [= remains of fat of pig after lard has been extracted by boiling], describes traditional oven heated with 'faggot' [= bundle of sticks used as fuel], recalls eating 'shackles' [= broth, stew] cooked in large pan over fire, tells series of anecdotes about farm labourers in past and impressive weights they were able to carry.
