[Side 1] Mr Manton discusses hedge maintenance in detail, explains how to clear dead wood out with 'hatchet' [= light, short-handled axe] and how to handle occasional 'stoven' [= tree stump], describes how to 'lay' hedge [= intertwine branches of brushwood to form/repair hedge] with stakes and elm or hazel binders, stresses importance of ensuring hedges safe for horses for regular local hunts, reflects on how much he enjoys taking piecework with local agriculturalist since retiring. [Side 2] Mr Manton talks about his apprenticheship as hedge-cutter, learning different aspects of job from experienced hedge-cutters, recalls being runner-up in first competition and subsequently winning numerous contests, compares wages now and in past, explains importance of maintaining hedge properly every ten years.
