'pearl', 'brilliant' and 'railroad', plaits sold at Tring market to buyers in Luton and Dunstable hat trade, recalls children plaiting at school during holidays. [Side 2] Nellie describes trips to Tring market in past, mentions children as young as seven/eight often made plaits, explains different types of plaits, describes process of milling and whitening straw with 'brimstone' [= sulphur] before and after plaiting, recalls several hat buyers from Luton, brief discussion of demise of plaiting locally and state of Luton hat industry.
