[Side 1] Nellie discusses local cottage industry of straw plaiting, explains how best straw was selected from 'rick' [= stack of corn/hay] and made into bunches, describes different types of plaiting, incl. 'pearl', 'brilliant' and 'railroad', plaits sold at Tring market to buyers in Luton and Dunstable hat trade, recalls children plaiting at school during holidays. [Side 2] Nellie describes trips to Tring market in past, mentions children as young as seven/eight often made plaits, explains different types of plaits, describes process of milling and whitening straw with 'brimstone' [= sulphur] before and after plaiting, recalls several hat buyers from Luton, brief discussion of demise of plaiting locally and state of Luton hat industry.
