[Side 1] Fred recalls leaving school aged 13, talks about first jobs on farm incl. ploughing with horses, discusses typical wages, mentions leaving to work on docks in Wales before returning to local farm as carter, tells series of anecdotes about life on farm at Itchington incl. rescuing young boy from lock pool and occasion when farm worker returned drunk from Swan Inn having borrowed money to buy tobacco. [Side 2] Fred tells series of anecdotes about farm work incl. 'bailie' [= bailiff, farm manager] who was renowned for whistling so farm workers always knew when he was en route to check their work, recalls large quantities of cider made and drunk locally in past, memories of Thornbury School incl. fight with classmate on way home, recalls winning bet (packet of cigarettes) for ploughing feat, briefly talks about hedging.
