[Side 1] Mr Paine describes typical annual cycle on hop farm incl. setting up poles and use of dung, explains best time to prune and dress hops, recalls picking hops by hand in past and drying over warm air, describes coal-fired 'oast house' [= building with kiln for drying hops] and use of charcoal and 'brimstone' [= sulphur] to dry hops, stresses skill in judging corerct duration for drying hops, talks briefly about harvesting by hand in past incl. mowing with scythe and leaving sheaves for fortnight in 'shock' [= group of sheaves placed upright for drying], reflects on impact of combine harvester, lists typical local crop rotation cycle (wheat, then clover and rye grass, then field is ploughed up for beans). [Side 2] Mr Paine lists typical crops grown locally incl. oats, beans, peas and rye grass, describes typical day working with horses in past incl. feeding times, mucking out and bedding horses down for night, reflects on leisure pursuits in past incl. 'goal running' [= traditional Kent game, similar to 'tag', in which two teams of players attempt to run round triangular course avoiding capture by opposition], recalls regular matches against Smarden and Tenterden and sing-songs afterwards, explains system of scoring 'stroke' by completing circuit without being caught, briefly talks about driving livestock to market.
