Description
[Side 1] Tom briefly mentions starting work aged 11, talks about decline of local lace making tradition, reflects on working conditions and wages in past, compares cost of living now in past, recalls time when village had 3 bakehouses, describes use of 'faggots' [= bundle of sticks used as fuel] to heat ovens. [Side 2] Tom recalls walking to work, discusses working hours and first wages, describes 'boneshaker' [= bicycle before introduction of pneumatic tyres], recalls witnessing fire at local mill just after owners had opened new building and installed new machinery, mill subsequently turned into saw mill for grinding.
