Description
[Side 1] Harry talks about severe flash floods of August 1952, recalls first noticing water rising up through ground in dairy, explains how he took turns with wife to bail out dairy through night, recounts witnessing devastating impact on Withypool and surrounding valley next morning, recalls riding to Withypool next day and relief at discovering mother had survived. [Side 2] Harry reflects on impact of floods, mentions bridge and neighbour's farm buildings and 'hayrick' [= haystack] swept away, comments others suffered more severely esp. at Lynmouth, describes how own cattle survived despite meadows flooding, recalls attempts by fire service and local community to salvage property, describes impact on landscape incl. loss of hedges, trees etc. Continued at 1LL0014972 S1.
