Description
[Side 1] Ernie recalls going with mother and sisters to work for 6d a day in all weathers, explains how to build 'rick' [= stack], compares rick-building now and in past, talks about laying hedge to keep sheep in field, describes harvesting gang mowing and reaping by hand, comments paid per acre only once work completed. [Side 2] Ernie describes in detail how to brew beer, recalls brewing 165 gallons at peak, compares wages and living standards now and in past, recalls villagers receiving parish poor relief, talks about sense of community in past incl. sharing pig. Note: Recording date 1957-07 noted by ear, 1957-10 written on lacquer disc label.
