Description
[Side 1] Alf explains how to build and thatch corn stack incl. use of 'staddle' [= raised platform on which stack is built to deter vermin] and importance of 'barge-course' [= portion of thatch on stack extending slightly beyond end to keep out rain], discusses harvesting machines incl. reaper, self-deliverer and binder, recalls men used to 'fag' by hand [= to cut corn with sickle] and women would tie sheaves, talks about ploughing with horses, describes typical working day and reflects on farm workers' wages in past. [Side 2] Alf lists typical jobs on farm, started work aged 9, recalls prank played by farmer who asked him to pick up sticks with two ends and try to find any with one end, explains wage structure for farm workers before World War One, compares farming now and in past, comments 'once done well is better than twice half done', discusses reduction in farm work force and demise of village blacksmith.
