Christmas tours on foot, discusses music lessons with local teacher. [Side 2] Reuben lists first jobs as apprentice blacksmith incl. making 'shut links' [= links for chains], staples and S-hooks, recalls shoeing first horse at West Woodhay farm, discusses agricultural machinery repairs and gate ironwork, recalls making tips, hobnails and bars for shoes, talks about wages as 'improver' [= person placed in trade for work experience at reduced wages] at agricultural engineering firm making rake teeth for 'elevators' [= machine used for raising hay/straw to top of stack] and waggon and cart iron work, explains piece work pay included wages for own 'striker' [= assistant operator who wields heavy sledge-hammer].
