Description
[Side 1] Eli talks about severe winter of 1881, recalls collecting daily orders from local farmhouses for carter and being unable to get back to village from outlying farms due to amount of snow, remembers 6 foot high drfits in places. [Side 2] Eli reflects on changes in farming, describes poverty in past and recalls people stealing swedes at night to avoid starvation, mentions grandfather bringing up family on 8 shillings a week despite working for wealthy farmer, describes how father used to walk to Upper Heyford to buy cheaper barley flour, discusses low wages and harsh working conditions incl. long hours during harvest and no overtime payments. Recording date 1953-05-20 noted by ear, 1953-03-24 written on lacquer disc label.
