[Side 1] Bill describes his 'byre' [= cow-shed] and talks about measures to prevent premature birth of calves, cleaning muck out to 'midden' [= muck heap], recalls introduction of regular testing and inoculation, mentions traditional remedies for preventing 'calf picking' [= premature birth/abortion in cows], incl. 'hinging' [= hanging] 'lile' [= little] locally quarried stone up in byre till string broke or hinging lile 'clout bag' [= cloth bag] of salt from beam or joist, mentions common superstition of nailing 'hoss-shoe' [= horse-shoe] above door. [Side 2] Bill describes general layout of farm buildings and design of 'to-fall byre' [= lean-to cow-shed] with loft 'aboon' [= above] stable end for hen-house and pigeon loft, recalls barn burning down in 1934, discusses ploughing set number of 'rigs' [= ridges] per day, sowing, mowing, stacking and 'thacking' [= thatching], storing corn in 'mowstead' [= bay in barn], threshing by hand, transporting loose straw in 'creel' [= large wicker basket] or 'wap' [= bundle of straw].
