Description
[Side 1] Simey recounts story of murder in 1791 of Elsdon shopkeeper, Margaret Crozier, and of subsequent pursuit and eventual hanging of culprit, William Winter: man, two women and 'cuddy' [= donkey] spotted by 'herd' [= shepherd] while eating on local hillside, gang then robbed and attacked shopkeeper on 'The Raa' [= The Row] returning later to kill her, herd reported sighting and gang were pursued, man finally arrested in Throckley, tried and hanged at Newcastle, body taken and hung from 'gibbet' [= gallows] on hilltop overlooking The Raa; Winters Gibbet, now with wooden head, still stands on same spot. [Side 2] Anty tells series of anecdotes about local characters.
