A Study of the Living Dialects of Lincolnshire Based on an Investigation by Questionnaire

Description

M.A. thesis on the dialects of Lincolnshire, based on fieldwork carried out between June and December 1951 using versions four and five of the Dieth-Orton Questionnaire. The collector made initial fieldwork trips to Digby and Fulbeck, the former in the company of Victor Bailey of Digby. The thesis is divided into five chapters. The first analyses the sounds of the Lincolnshire dialects, the second presents selected material from answers to the questions of the Dieth-Orton Questionnaire (including word sheets and word maps) and the third discusses dialectal differences in Lincolnshire. Chapter Four offers a critique of the Questionnaire used, whilst the final section discusses the mechanical (gramophone) recordings of Lincolnshire speakers made by the collector. Photographs of some of the informants, and a Word List, are also included.
