Folk Drama and the Chapbook. A Study of the Folk Play in Greater Manchester

Description

[M.A.] dissertation examining the folk play and printed Chapbook versions of the play in the Greater Manchester area of England. Its first two chapters present the available evidence on the subject, examining in turn the known references to the folk play and related customs, and known references to the Chapbooks and their relationships with each other. Chapter Three compares the folk play and the Chapbook, with the results leading to an examination of the concepts of children's tradition, oral transmission, and the creation of the institutionalisation of the folk play. The final chapter compares the results of Chapter Three with fieldwork undertaken by the collector on the folk play and Chapbook in Rochdale. The study contains two appendices. The first relates to the folk play in Greater Manchester in 1976, and includes observations and an overview of the material collected in that year. This is presented in the form of photocopied ms. play texts, typed text transcriptions and (photocopied and original) photographs of performances by the Bury Pace Eggers, children of Greenbank Primary School and Balderstone Primary School, and the Mossley Pace Eggers (members of the Saddleworth Morris Men). The Bury Pace Eggers' text and photographs are from a performance in Radcliffe, with additional photocopied photographs of a 1972 performance in Droylsden, sent to the collector by another photographer. The children from Greenbank Primary School performed the play at their school and at the Cenotaph in Rochdale. The text included is of the school performance, while the photocopied photographs are of the outdoor performance. Six black and white photographs of children from Balderstone School performing the play in their school gymnasium are included, as well as a photocopy of Mossley Pace Eggers' ms. play text and six copies of photographs of them performing in Mossley. The second appendix contains photocopies of Chapbooks and printed texts from Lancashire, including also personal recollections from two individuals. The Bibliography contains four sections: known Lancashire Chapbooks, the folk play in Greater Manchester, fieldwork and general.
