Proverbial Reference in the Novels of Arnold Bennett

Description

[M.A.] thesis comprising eight chapters on Arnold Bennett's use of proverbs in his novels. The chapters are titled Techniques and Sources, The Proverb: Meaning and Use, The Novelist in his Chosen Locality, Bennett's Methods as a Novelist, Bennett on Home Ground, The 'Clayhanger' Trilogy and its Problems of Form, Problems and Deviations in Bennett's Realism, and Success and Limitation in the Final Years. The first of two appendices includes a selection of proverbs, proverbial phrases and other relevant material common to the Potteries and to North Staffordshire generally. These items were sent to the collector in response to his request in Staffordshire newspapers for local material.
