Addendum to Theses

Description

This addendum contains the compiler's thoughts on three theses held in the Institute of Dialect and Folk Life Studies archive. The theses under consideration are Maxine Baker's study of songs of the pit communities in Northumberland and Durham( LAVC/SRP/2/167), M. R. Webber's study of Bedfordshire folk songs ( LAVC/SRP/2/168) and Colin Wharton's study of folk songs from the North Riding of Yorkshire ( LAVC/SRP/1/077. The compiler provides an introduction to the addendum, information on the character of the material included and its arrangement. He states that his hope in starting the addendum is to provide one more possible avenue of understanding for future (folksong?) students, and that future students will add to the addendum thoughts and comments of their own on work held in the Institute's archive. The compiler's own comments generally focus on individual songs cited in the three works above. A number of ms. comments on his writing from the Institute's Director, Stewart Sanderson, are included throughout the text.
