Folk Tales in Edo as a Reflection of Culture

Description

M.A. dissertation comprising an Introduction, five chapters and sample texts of Edo folktales. The Introduction discusses the name Edo (referring to the people who inhabit Benin City, Benin East and Benin West in Western Nigeria), origins, history, place, people and population. Following chapters analyse the structure and classification of Edo folktales, the narrative art as exemplified by an evening story session, the Ughoron and professional storytellers, Edo cultural tradition (economy, social organisation and political system, religion, witchcraft, magic and life cycle rituals), and the influence of cultural traditions on the tales. English translations of nineteen folktales are included, with two of these also presented in Edo. Black and white illustrations (photographic copies) are included throughout the dissertation.
