Clogs and Clog Making. With Reference to the Aire and Calder Valleys of the West Riding of Yorkshire

Description

M.A. dissertation which provides a survey of clogs and clogmaking in the West Riding of Yorkshire (focussing on the industry in Airedale and the Calder Valley), both setting the trade and the article of footwear itself in a historical context, and assessing the state of clogmaking at the time when the study was undertaken. Emphasis has been placed on the synchronic aspect of the study and a detailed account given of clogmaking with reference to its internal organisation. The individual clogmaker, the clog-making factory and the clog-sole manufacturer are examined in detail. The historical background of both clog and clogmaking is considered, with special reference to the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and a basic enumerative survey undertaken. The dissertation includes illustrations, groundplans of clogmaking premises, appendices containing tables detailing population figures and numbers of clogmakers in the West Riding, taken from censuses and trade directories for the period 1821-1951, a list of collections of clogmaking material held in Yorkshire museums, a Directory list of clogmakers (at 1969) and a list of the towns surveyed. Volume two contains black and white photographs taken at the premises of Mr. H. Greenwood, Keighley, F. Walkley, Birkby, John Maude and Son, Hebden Bridge, an unidentified Welsh clogmaker and artefacts at the Cliffe Castle Museum, Keighley.
