Some Aspects of Custom and Belief in the West Indian Community in Leeds

Description

Study presented for the postgraduate Diploma in Folk Life Studies. Information gathered from informants relates to customs and beliefs observed in individual islands of the West Indies, or to observances still practised in Leeds by people originally from those islands. The three chapters cover calendar customs (Christmas, Boxing Day, New Year's Eve, New Year's Day, Lent, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Easter, Labour Day, Whitsun, Emancipation Day, Harvest Thanksgiving, November 5th), customs relating to the life cycle (birth, baptism, naming, birthdays, reception, marriage and death) and superstitions (good and bad luck, lore relating to the body and human life, beliefs relating to abstractions and miscellaneous objects, lore relating to the sky). Biographical information relating to the informants is also provided.
