An Annotated Collection of Visayan Riddles from Leyte and Samar, Philippines

Description

M.A. dissertation comprising an annotated collection of riddles from the Philippines (islands of Leyte and Samar), gathered by the collector from the archive of the Divine Word University Museum in Tacloban City, and Donn V. Hart's book 'Riddles in Filipino Folklore: An Anthropological Analysis' (Syracuse: Syracuse University Press, 1964). The dissertation's introduction offers information on the provenance, scope, content and classification of these collections. Four hundred and ninety-three riddles are analysed in seven chapters, and these are grouped according to comparisons the riddles make to a living creature, one or more animals, a person, several persons, plants, things (objects of nature and man-made objects), and enumerations of comparisons, details of form, details of colour and characteristic acts. Each riddle is listed twice. The original Visayan text is accompanied by an English translation. Visayan riddle images are cross-referenced to English riddles indicated by Archer Taylor's classification numbers. Riddles that have been gathered from Donn Hart's book bear his classification number as well. An Index of Solutions is also included.
