Marriage and Death Ceremonies in Derna, Eastern Libya

Description

Research study, submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirement for a Master's degree in English Literature, which describes and analyses the customs associated with death and marriage in the town of Derna in eastern Libya. The Introduction describes the town and the way of life of its inhabitants, followed by a more detailed consideration of death customs, including death sacrifices, the giving by relatives and friends of gifts to the bereaved, washing and burial rites, rites observed by men, widows' mourning, the visiting of tombs, belief in the existence of the soul after death, causes and preventive aspects of death, the evil eye, the curse, saints and ghosts. The chapter on marriage customs considers the marriage proposal, age of marriage and the procuring of a suitor, the dowry payment, the Fatiha ceremony, the engagement ceremony, the Henna day, Clothing-day, the Entering or Consummation day.
